There has been a vague, but nasty smell lurking around our second floor for the past day or two. We have searched the entire floor for the culprit and have come up with nothing. Trash is emptied, trash can sanitized, sink and garbage disposal spic and span, refrigerator cleaned out but the smell still remains. Can't find it? Just cover it up, right? Last night we sprinkled down that smelly powder stuff and vacuumed it up, opened up all the windows, lit a candle, and it was smelling alright. Mission accomplished.
Then I walked down stairs this morning, took in a big sniff and was hit with the odor again. I don't know what else to do!!

Hmm...I have a story for almost everyhing you blog about my lil' dearie!
This one day at my prev. job. I had the worse gas! Well, my poor boss ran around all day looking for the source of this rancid smell. it.was.me.( I had period farts and gas)
However he made SUCH a big deal about it that I couldn't confess it was MEEEEE!!!
So he had us empty all the garbage cans and disinfect them, from each exam room and under each and every sink!
I was sooooooo embarrassed, throughout the day I would sneak in a corner and fart and SOMEONE would come around the corner and I'd say "OH my gosh! It's over here too!" and I'd help look.
I never told him it was me, until about 3 years ago.(this was my first year or two working there) He remembered that incident and laughed and laughed!!
So, unless you have rodents. Maybe something died in the walls. I know thats bad to say, but it's a foul odor.
Happy stench hunting sweetie!
Ugh. I hope you find it soon. I'd be starting to move things and then clean. At work we recently had a skunk spray outside and it was the worst smell ever. Took forever to go away!
I'm betting something died under your house. A few months ago our laundry room smelled horrible. Like gag me horrible. Our machines are not even a year old, so I knew nothing should be mildewed. The area under our house where the laundry room is located is bricked off, so we couldn't see directly under the room. We never knew for sure, but we bet that some critter got behind/between those bricks and died. A few weeks later, the smell was gone. I hope your's doesn't last that long. So light a candle again. :-)
Oh yuck... we had that problem in Oklahoma... the sewer pipe was leaking... it wasn't good!
This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry has the B.O.-smell in his car & even Elaine is affected by it, having the smell caught in her hair. Good luck to you! I wonder if there is a professional smell-tracker you could hire? ;-)
Ugh, i hope you find the culprit.
I am having this issue in my laundry room right now!! I have taken out the trash, cloroxed everything, febreezed everything, and it still smells funny. I hope you find your culprit!
is it possible there is a dead animal inside or close outside?
Oh no! A few weeks ago we had an unidentified gross smell somewhere in out kitchen that even a super deep cleaning didn't get rid of. So to keep from having to smell it all the time I wore a fabric softener sheet around my neck. It really saved my sense of smell.
And we eventually realized the smell was coming from our broken garbage disposal...
oh no!! I hope you find what's causing the smell soon! How frustrating to not be able to find where it's coming from.

Ewww...Hope you find it soon! We had that problem at our house in Mississippi...Never found it but we moved out so thankfully we don't have to deal with it anymore.
Oh man, that is the worst! Try some air freshners that spray every few minutes!
What a stink! Have you checked inside the ventilation system? Hope you find it soon...nose plugs are NOT attractive ;) LOL
Is there a dead animal in the walls, floor, or vents? If you rent, you can ask maintenance to come and do something about that. It'd drive me crazzzyyy too because I need things to smell good all the time otherwise I can't focus on like, life. LOL!
Time to move!!!
We had that problem a while back and finally found a dead mouse under the cabinets! Oh my gosh, can you believe it?!? -e
